PEOPLE

The target population for this project is the Hulme community. Based on the data collected from the compendium, it can be seen that there is a wide range of age groups that is living in Hulme currently. The distribution of the groups however, differs from one another with students and young profesionals being the largest age group whilst people aging 75 and above being the smallest group.

ISSUE

A research was conducted early in the year by interviewing the people of Hulme to obtain a general census on the living conditions and environment of Hulme. Apart from that , the data was also compared with a compendium of Hulme which has been done beforehand by 5th and 6th years students

Based from the interview that we did during the Birley Field's event , several key issue that arises.

First of all, due to the Hulme redevelopment scheme, there is an increasing number of students and young profesionals moving into Hulme. Because of this, the is an increasing number of ammenities that is built to cater to this age group. However, this creates a problem where the original locales of Hulme felt that they are being pushed away out of Hulme to give way to these new age groups.

Secondly, from one of our interviews, one of the respondant presses that there is a need for a learning centre for the people of Hulme. This is because it is becoming harder and harder for the less fortunate people who is interested in a particular field to access sources and enroll into classes. Additionally, it was also mentioned that it is the responsibilty of the Birley Field's campus to introduce these knowledge sources to the populace.

I looked into this response and had found out that the Hulme Library and Hulme Adult learning centre has been closed down and the closest adult learning centre is Longsight

HULME REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

>36 above

Moving on from the issue of learning , I have founded out that there are some issues with regards to learning in Hulme ; illiteracy and innumeracy.

From the data gathered, the number has decreases significantly since 1948 untill 2011. However from 2011 onwards the number has been stagnant since then.

DEFINING FUNCTIONAL ILLITERACY

In the general census, illiteracy is defined as having basic reading ability or none at all

DEFINING FUNCTIONAL INNUMERACY
